Golden Tornadoes sweep away Tomcats

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (May 1, 2010) – Geneva College took a pair of games from the Thiel College baseball team on Saturday by scores of 4-1 and 8-6 at 33rd Street Field. The setbacks give the Tomcats a record of 13-24 as they enter the season's final series – a three-game set versus Saint Vincent – on Friday.
Thiel starting pitcher Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) pitched well enough to win, tossing a complete-game six-hitter. The freshman struck out two while walking only one.
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) scored Thiel's only run in the top of the sixth inning. Johnson was 2-for-3 in the game.
In game two, the Tomcat offense came to life for an inning, but ultimately struggled down the stretch as the Golden Tornadoes earned the two-run victory.
Thiel did the bulk of its damage via a five-run third inning to tie the game at 5-5, but in the next half inning Geneva scored a run to take the lead for good.
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) led Thiel with three hits in four at bats. The sophomore right fielder also scored a run.
Johnson hit his first home run of the season – a two run shot – in the third inning. His two RBI paced Thiel.
