High-flying offense leads Thiel to, 23-9, rout of Geneva

GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 30, 2010) – Shades of the prolific offenses of Thiel baseball teams past were on display on Friday afternoon at Tomcat Park, as the home-standing club waxed the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes, 23-9.
The Tomcat offense out-hit Geneva 26-to-11 on the day, led by a 5-for-6 outing from junior centerfielder Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester), who also scored three runs and drove in three more.
Including Johnson, five Tomcats notched multi-hit games.
Also of note were sophomore right fielder Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley), who went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and a game-high five RBI, and freshman shortstop Ryan Dixon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), who registered three hits in four at bats, including a two-run homer in the second inning.
Dixon also drove in four runs on the day and scored four more, which ties the school single-game mark.
Freshman leftfielder Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) also earned a spot in the single-game record book, tying for the most at bats in a contest with seven. King had three hits in the game with a pair of RBI and a run scored.
The hit that received the loudest ovation, however, was the two-run triple by relief pitcher Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) in the eighth inning. The three-bagger was the first of the season for the senior pitcher.
Thiel held a 6-4 lead through the first 4 1/2 innings before breaking the game open with a 10-run bottom of the fourth. Geneva pulled to within nine runs over the next two innings before the Tomcats slammed the door shut with a five-run eighth to close out the scoring.
Josh Russell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) earned the win to up his season record to 3-5. Russell and Borland each struck out six batters.
Justin Acosta led the Golden Tornadoes at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Thiel (13-22) visits Geneva (14-20) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
