GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 3, 2010) –
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) belted a three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Thiel College baseball team a thrilling, 13-10, walk-off win and a doubleheader sweep of the Westminster Titans at Tomcat Park on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the day,
Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) provided the heroics with a single that drove in
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) and
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) to give the Tomcats a, 12-11, walk-off victory.
With the sweep, Thiel improves to 11-9 on the season and evens its Presidents' Athletic Conference record at 4-4. Westminster falls to 7-11 and 4-3 in league play.
In the day cap's decisive seventh inning, Johnson – who went 9-for-10 on the day – singled to start things off. A King bunt moved Johnson to second and an intentional walk of Porter set up the winning blast. Scarpitti drove the first pitch he saw onto the hillside beyond right-centerfield.
Dave Kane (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) earned the win in relief.
Scarpitti notched a game-high four runs in the contest, while
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) was close behind with three RBI and three hits in four at bats. Johnson went a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs in the game.
In the first game, Porter and
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) drove in three and four runs, respectively, to spark the Tomcat offense. Johnson had a game-high four hits in the game and four Tomcats posted two-run outings.
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) improved to 3-1 on the year with the victory.
Thiel returns to action on Wednesday when they visit Bethany at 3:30 p.m. The Tomcats and Bison split the teams' first two games in Greenville on March 30.
