Gators come back to down Tomcats, 6-5

Cody Northcott
GREENVILLE, Pa. (April 25, 2010) – Allegheny scored three runs in the top of the ninth to earn its first lead of the day and closer Frank Brank posted a 1-2-3 frame to defeat Thiel College, 6-5, in baseball action at Tomcat Part on Sunday afternoon.
The setback made waste of a stellar effort from Tomcat starting pitcher Cody Northcott (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton), who struck out eight and walked two in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Thiel did most of its scoring on a pair of homers by Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) and Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson).
Scarpitti's three-run bomb staked the 'Cats to a 4-1 lead in the third inning, with Thomas' solo shot coming an inning later.
Down, 5-1, in the seventh, the Allegheny offense got to work, scratching out two runs then adding the final three in the ninth.
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) took the loss for Thiel in relief.
The Gators' Matt Stahl and Zach Nichols each had a team-high two hits.
Kyle Burns earned the win by tossing four shutout innings after replacing starter Justin Abbott.
Thiel (12-21) returns to action on Wednesday when they welcome Grove City for a 4 p.m. contest.
