ERIE, Pa. (April 15, 2010) – Penn State Behrend wielded the lumber and took advantage of a shaky defense as it downed the Thiel College baseball team, 17-11, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.
Behrend barely outhit the Tomcats (16-to-13), but the Tomcats committed seven errors which accounted for seven unearned runs.
The loss overshadowed outstanding offensive days for Thiel's
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) and
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley). Johnson went 4-for-6 from the leadoff spot, while batting in three runs and scoring two more. Double went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
Starting pitcher
Cory Borland (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) – who gave up one earned run in two innings of work – took the loss for the Tomcats.
Thiel returns to the diamond on Saturday when it welcomes Washington & Jefferson for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. College President
Troy VanAken will throw out the game's ceremonial first pitch as a part of the day's inauguration celebration.
