VERO BEACH, Fla. (March 5, 2010) – The Alvernia Crusaders bested the Thiel College baseball team for the second game in a row – this time to the tune of 18-5 – Friday afternoon at Dodgertown.
The setback drops the Tomcats to 3-4 on the season, while Alvernia ups its record to 6-1.
The Crusaders jumped out to a 13-0 lead through the game's first four innings, before the Tomcats cracked the scoreboard with a
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio, Massillon Jackson) run driven in by
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa., Rochester).
The Tomcats tacked on a pair of runs in each of the next two innings but Alvernia matched them run-for-run to maintain a hefty advantage.
Shortstop
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio, Midpark) paced Thiel with three hits, while outfielders
Ryan Bernat (Indiana, Pa., Homer-Center) and
Phil Double (Evans City, Pa., Seneca Valley) each notched two base knocks.
Despite the disparate run totals, the Crusaders outhit the Tomcats by a mere 16-to-13 margin.
James Teyssier (McKees Rocks, Pa., Montour) took the loss for the 'Cats to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Thiel wraps up its eight-game spring trip on Saturday when they take on SUNY Oneonta at 10 a.m at Dodgertown's Homan Stadium.
