GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 30, 2010) –
Josh Russell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the Thiel College baseball team bested Bethany, 5-0, to salvage the second game of a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Tomcat Park.
Russell, who improved to 2-1 on the season, struck out 11 Bison in the seven inning affair to avenge a, 5-4, loss earlier in the afternoon. The junior right-hander faced 26 batters in the game which lasted all of 90 minutes.
Thiel improved to 9-8 (2-3 PAC) with the win, while Bethany suffered its second loss of the season to fall to 9-2 (1-1 PAC).
Sophomore shortstop
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) went 2-for-3 with a run in the daycap, while senior
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.)'s (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) two RBI and freshman
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler)'s (Butler, Pa./Butler) two runs were team highs in the game.
Earlier in the day, Bethany outhit Thiel 10-to-7 as the Bison earned their first conference win of the season, 5-4. Bethany jumped out to a, 5-0, lead over the first five innings before Thiel started chipping into the advantage with a three-run bottom-of-the-fifth.
Thiel managed one run in the sixth inning but couldn't complete the comeback, despite five Bethany errors.
Catcher
Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) led Thiel with a run and two hits in three at bats, while DH
Jarod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) scored a team-best two runs.
Thiel returns to action on Friday, April 2 when they visit Westminster for a 3 p.m. contest.
