GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 27, 2010) – The Thiel College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader with Waynesburg on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Yellow Jackets, 7-1, in the first game, then bouncing back to rout the Jackets, 18-8, in the nightcap.
Thiel is now 8-7 (1-2 PAC) on the season; Waynesburg left Greenville with a 6-7 (2-1) mark.
In the second game, shortstop
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) went 3-for-4 with four RBI and leftfielder
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) scored four runs to spark the offense as Thiel earned its first conference win of the 2010 campaign.
The Tomcats smacked out 15 hits in the game including Thomas' second homerun of year – a two-run shot to left field in fourth inning.
Thiel burst out of the gates, scoring seven runs in the first inning to chase the Waynesburg starter, then tacked on 11 runs over the next four innings.
Dave Diyorio (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Starter
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) was handed his first loss of the season in game one, as the Tomcat bats stayed relatively quiet. Thiel was outhit 10-to-6, with DH
Weston Snyder (Cranesville, Pa./Northwestern) scoring the team's only run in the third inning.
Centerfielder
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) paced the Thiel offense by going 2-for-3. Third baseman
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) batted in the Tomcats' lone run.
The Tomcats welcome Bethany on Tuesday for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
