Yellow Jackets edge Thiel, 2-1, in conference opener

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 26, 2010) – Waynesburg scored all the runs it would need in the bottom of the eighth inning to down Thiel College, 2-1, in Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon.

The contest – which was the league-opener for both teams – saw the Yellow Jackets raise their record to 5-7 (1-0 PAC), while the Tomcats fell to, 7-6 (0-1 PAC).

The two teams will meet again at 1 p.m. on Saturday for a doubleheader at Tomcat Park.

Thiel starter Jim Teyssier enjoyed another fine start, giving up eight hits with five strikeouts while going the distance for the 'Cats, but was bested by the Jackets' Anthony Longo who scattered six hits over nine innings of work.

Senior first baseman Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) scored Thiel's only run of the game in the top of the fourth when he doubled and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by freshman Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler).

Waynesburg's Andrew Spargur and Corey Goeggelman scored the game's tying and winning runs, respectively.
