COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 15, 2010) – The Thiel College baseball team had a successful northern debut on Monday afternoon by posting a doubleheader sweep of Capital University to even its record at 5-5.
The Tomcats won the first game against the Crusaders, 1-0, and then posted a, 6-5, come-from-behind victory in the night cap.
In game one, Thiel made the most of a complete-game one-hitter turned in by starting pitcher
James Teyssier (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) who improved to 2-1. Teyssier notched four 1-2-3 innings while facing only 24 batters in the seven-inning affair.
Thiel scraped out the only run of the game in the sixth inning when
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) (Rochester, Pa./Rochester)scored on a
Brock Porter (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg) single to left field.
In the second game, Capital jumped out to a, 4-1, lead before the Thiel offense pounded out five runs in the final two innings of play to score the sweep.
After Porter and
Eric King (Butler, Pa./Butler) (Butler, Pa./Butler) plated Tomcat runs in the top of the sixth, Thiel completed its dramatic comeback in the seventh.
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson)singled up the middle to start things off and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Bobby Hillier (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark) (Brook Park, Ohio/Midpark). Thomas advanced to third on an error by the shortstop after
Nick Ferracano (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) (New Kensington, Pa./Plum)grounded out to first.
A second error by the Crusaders' shortstop allowed Thomas to score as Johnson reached base safely.
Johnson scored on a triple by King during the very next at bat and, in turn, King came home on a Porter single to right.
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.)grounded out to second base to end the Tomcats' half of the inning.
Jarrod Nanna (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh) paced Thiel with two hits and two RBI. King plated a team-high two runs.
Brad Bates (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger)earned the win in relief to up his record to 2-0.
Thiel returns to action on Tuesday when it visits Hiram at 3:30 p.m.
