Presidents sweep Thiel to claim PAC baseball title

WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 9, 2009) – Top-seeded Washington & Jefferson swept Thiel College by scores of 19-18 and 7-4 to claim the 2009 Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Championship at Ross Memorial Park on Saturday.

Thiel ends its season with a record of 29-15, the second-most wins in program history.

In the first game of the day, the Tomcats fell short in one of the wildest games in PAC post-season history as the 'Cats and Presidents combined for 35 runs on 34 hits.

In the first game of the day, Thiel jumped out to an eight-run lead in the top of the second inning, but W&J torched the Tomcats for 16 runs in the bottom of the frame.

The resilient Tomcats would bounce back in the next inning, hanging six runs on the board in the third to pull within two and turn the game into a nail-biter from then on.

Chad Ulogar (Willoughby, Ohio/South), Eric Boylan (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox), Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.), and Chris Dunham (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Linesville) all homered for Thiel in the contest, with Boylan batting in a team-high four runs and Scarpitti scoring a game-best four runs.

In the day's second game, the Presidents never trailed as they held off the Tomcats, 7-4, for a PAC crown and a trip to the NCAA regional tournaments.

Senior Matt Stumpf (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto Rox) stood out offensively for Thiel, going 4-for-5 with an RBI.

Junior Louie Parilla led the 'Cats with two RBIs.

Senior pitcher Josh Tedesco (Campbell, Ohio/Ursuline) was saddled with the loss in his final collegiate start.
