GREENVILLE, Pa. (May 2, 2009) – Junior first baseman
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) smashed three homeruns and racked up seven RBIs to power Thiel College to a doubleheader sweep of Saint Vincent College, Saturday afternoon at Tomcat Park.
The two-win day raised the Tomcats' record to 26-12 on the season, while the visiting Bearcats fell to 8-30. Thiel has now won seven of its last eight games to continue its late-season tear.
The Tomcats got a near-perfect start out of senior lefty
Josh Tedesco (Campbell, Ohio/Ursuline) in game one, as the homer-driven offense hung six runs on the board.
Tedesco, making his final regular season start in Greenville, tossed a complete-game four-hitter for his eighth win of the season. The Campbell, Ohio native struck out a season-high-tying five batters, while giving up only one earned run.
Scarpitti started the scoring in the second inning with his first long ball of the day. Then, with the score tied at 1-1 in the fourth, the junior smashed his second homer – a two-run shot – to give Thiel a lead it would not surrender.
Senior designated hitter
Chris Dunham (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Linesville) hit the third Tomcat homer of the game in the contest's very next at bat to put Thiel up, 4-1.
In the fifth, senior
Matt Stumpf (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto Rox) went yard and
Chad Ulogar (Willoughby, Ohio/South) singled and scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring.
In the day cap, Saint Vincent jumped out to a four-run lead, before Thiel answered with a run in bottom of the second and erupted for nine more scores over the next four frames.
Scarpitti sparked a five-run frame in the fifth by launching his third homerun of the day – a three-run shot – to right field.
Ulogar,
Eric Boylan (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox),
Louie Parilla, and
Andrew Howard (Olney, Md./Sherwood) each registered two-hit days. Stumpf and Ulogar also scored a pair of runs in the win.
The Bearcats would only post one more run in the game, thanks to superlative pitching by starter
Dave Diyorio (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) – who picked up his eighth win of the year – and senior reliever
Mark Brewer (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk).
Thiel visits Saint Vincent on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest before travelling to Marietta on May 5 to close-out the regular season.
