GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson Presidents pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth to hold off Thiel College, 4-3, in Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball action at Tomcat Park Thursday afternoon.
Thiel (17-8; 9-4 PAC) held a one-run edge heading into the eighth inning, but W&J's Andy Trettel singled then scored on a base knock by Jim Pasquine.
Thiel was retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for the Presidents to extend their lead with a two-run Mike Kennedy homer in the ninth.
The Tomcats'
Louie Parrilla (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox) walked and moved to second on a single by
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) to start off the final frame before Pasquine – the W&J closer – retired the next two batters.
Chris Dunham (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Linesville) entered the game as a pinch hitter and delivered an RBI single to cut the Thiel deficit to one, but the next batter grounded out to end the game.
Andrew Howard (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Johnson each had two-hit days for the 'Cats. Howard also notched a two-RBI double in the fifth inning.
Lefty
Josh Tedesco (Campbell, Ohio/Ursuline) was the tough-luck loser for Thiel, falling to 6-2 on the year with a complete-game, five strikeout performance.
Thiel gets another crack at the Presidents on Saturday when they visit Washington for a 1 p.m. twinbill.
