GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split the first two games of a key Presidents' Athletic Conference match up with the Thomas More Saints on Saturday, dropping the first game, 10-0, then rebounding to win the day cap, 6-3.
The Tomcats finished the day with a 17-6 (9-2 PAC) mark on the season, while Thomas More is now 1-1 in PAC play to go along with a 14-3-1 record overall.
In the day's second game, Thiel starter
Dave Diyorio (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) settled down after a shaky start to shut down the Saints through the game's final five innings. Thiel also had to overcome a less-than-stellar defensive outing, which was marred by five errors.
Diyorio gave up five hits while striking out five and walking one in his complete-game effort.
The Tomcat offense also showed some life in fourth through sixth innings, as Thiel managed two runs in each of those frames.
Thiel accumulated seven hits – all by different batters – in the contest.
First baseman
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) went 1-for-2 with one walk and one run to go along with two RBIs. Third baseman
Ryan Oldfield (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) also drove in a pair of runs.
Right fielder
David Nypaver (Williamsfield, OH/Howland) paced Thiel with two runs scored.
In the series opener Thomas More got to Tomcat starter Josh Tesdesco early, chasing the southpaw after scoring seven runs over the game's first four innings.
Third baseman
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) led the 'Cats offensively with two hits in the game.
Thomas More DH Spencer Franzreb was 'on' at the plate, putting together a 3-for-4 day with two homers and four RBIs.
Thiel and Thomas More wrap-up their weekend set on Sunday at noon.
