GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel College earned a, 5-3, win over Geneva College at Tomcat Park on Saturday, to salvage a split of an afternoon twin bill. Geneva won the day's first game in dramatic fashion, 15-14.
Thiel's record moves to 24-12 on the year, while the Golden Tornadoes end the day with a 21-12 mark.
GAME TWO – Thiel 5, Geneva 3
In the day cap, the Tomcats scored all the runs they would need in the game's first two innings.
Senior leftfielder
Eric Boylan (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox) drove in
Matt Stumpf (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto Rox) in the bottom of the first to erase an early, 1-0, deficit. Geneva answered to regain the lead in the next half inning, but Thiel responded with a decisive four-run outburst.
Nine men came to the plate for Thiel in the second, with five reaching base.
Junior first baseman
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) reached on a lead-off walk and moved to second as
Louie Parilla was hit by a pitch. Sophomore
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) reached on an error by the pitcher to load the bases.
Senior
David Nypaver (Williamsfield, OH/Howland) became the second Thiel batter of the frame to be hit by a pitch to force in the game's tying run. Parilla scored when Stumpf grounded out to second base.
Shortstop
Chad Ulogar (Willoughby, Ohio/South) drove in Nypaver in the game's next at bat to close the book on Thiel's scoring plays.
Boylan had three of Thiel's seven hits.
Tomcat starting pitcher
Josh Russell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) earned the win to even his record at 2-2.
GAME ONE – Geneva 15, Thiel 14
Down by eight runs entering the seventh inning, the Geneva College offense went to work, plating nine runs and claiming a shocking, 15-14, comeback victory over Thiel College in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Tomcat Park.
The loss spoiled a fine offensive day by junior first baseman
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.), who registered three of Thiel's 14-hits. Scarpitti ended up 3-for-5 with two homeruns and five RBIs to highlight the Thiel offensive.
The Tomcats return to action on Friday, May 1 when they visit Saint Vincent for a 3 p.m. contest.
