GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team scored the only runs it would need in the second inning of Wednesday's, 2-1, win over Presidents' Athletic Conference rival Grove City. The victory secured a split of a midweek twinbill at Tomcat Park, after the Wolverines took the day's first game, 12-9.
Sophomore
Luke Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) – who reached base on a walk – came around to score on an errant throw by the Grove City right fielder to open up the scoring for Thiel. The Tomcats' very next batter –
Jake Thomas (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) – was driven in by
Chad Ulogar (Willoughby, Ohio/South) to score the eventual game-winner.
Grove City made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning when it pushed across its only run of the game before Thiel reliever
Mark Brewer (Beaver Falls/Blackhawk) came on to record the contest's final two outs.
Starter
Dave Diyorio (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) pitched another outstanding game for the 'Cats, giving up four hits over 6 1/3 innings of work for the win.
In the day's opening game, Grove City jumped out to an early nine-run lead, chasing Thiel starting pitcher
Josh Tedesco (Campbell, Ohio/Ursuline) after three innings.
The Tomcats posted one-run innings in the first, fourth, and sixth – two of those due to solo homers by Thomas and
Chris Dunham (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Linesville), respectively.
Thiel rallied to tie the score with a six-hit, six-run bottom of the seventh, but the Wolverines plated two runs in the top of the extra frame to grab the win.
Thiel (19-10; 11-6 PAC) returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Penn State-Behrend at 2 p.m.
