WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Thiel College baseball team upped its record to 5-1 on the young season with a dominant, 17-3, win over previously unbeaten Augustana (Ill.) College Thursday afternoon at the Chain O' Lakes complex in Winter Haven, Fla.
For the second consecutive game, No. 22 Thiel used a recipe of explosive offense, excellent starting pitching and superb defense to down a formidable opponent in the now-seven-one Vikings.
The Tomcats out-hit Augustana to the tune of 23-8, while committing just one error.
Starter
Dave Diyorio (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) turned in his second impressive outing of the young season, allowing one run off of five hits in seven innings or work. The righty walked just one batter in shutting down a potent Augustana offense that averaged nearly nine runs per game over its first seven games.
Thiel used a pair of big innings – the fifth and seventh – to do the bulk of their damage, offensively. The Tomcats scored five runs in each of those innings.
First baseman
Justin Scarpitti (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep.) continued his recent tear by going 4-for-6 while scoring four runs and batting in four more. Designated hitter
Chris Dunham (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Linesville) went 4-for-5 with a walk and four runs scored.
Chad Ulogar (Willoughby, Ohio/South) and
Matt Stumpf (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto Rox) each enjoyed three-hit days. Ulogar came around to score a pair of runs while knocking in one more; Stumpf scored a run and notched three RBIs.
Thiel returns to Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. on Thursday to take on Ohio Northern at 11:30 a.m.
