GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel starting pitcher
Josh Tedesco (Campbell, Ohio/Ursuline) made quick work of the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets on Friday afternoon, as the no. 23 Tomcats won their Presidents' Athletic Conference opener, 6-1.
Tedesco tossed a complete game in a brisk 1 hour and 45 minutes, while upping his record to 3-0 on the season and lowering his ERA to 2.37.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Thiel offense put together a three-run inning to take the lead for good. The Tomcats' first two batters of the inning –
Matt Stumpf (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto Rox) and
Andrew Howard (Olney, Md./Sherwood) – singled before
Eric Boylan (McKees Rocks/Sto Rox) accumulated his 14
th RBI of the season with a base knock of his own.
One at bat later, Howard and Boylan came around to score on a
Chris Dunham (Conneaut Lake, Pa./Linesville) single up the middle.
Boylan – who also scored the game's first run in the first inning – would finish his 3-for-4 day with two RBIs in addition to his two runs.
Thiel tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Waynesburg's only run of the day came on a fourth inning solo homer by third baseman Patrick Logan.
Thiel (9-3; 1-0 PAC) and the Yellow Jackets (5-7; 0-1 PAC) tangle again tomorrow in a doubleheader to be played at Mylan Park in Morgantown, W.Va. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
