EBENSBURG, Pa. – The Thiel College men's tennis team opened its season Sunday with an 8-1 non-conference win on the road over the Mount Aloysius Mounties.
Thiel won all three doubles matches. At first doubles,
Eli Flinchbaugh (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) and
Nathaniel Udell (Meadowbrook, Pa./Abington) defeated Matt Jacobs and Hunter Reed, 8-5.
Bret Vilage (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and
Takafumi Sasazaki (Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan/Hozen) defeated Zachary Johnson and Matthew Franz at second doubles, 8-4. At third doubles,
Evan Cessna (Kittanning, Pa./West Shamokin) and
Kevin Gilroy (Cuyahoga, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) won 8-5 over Trent Strous and Noah Noel.
The Tomcats won five singles matches. Flinchbaugh defeated Jacobs 6-0, 6-2 at first singles while Udell won 6-4, 6-1 over Reed at second singles.
Sasazaki earned a 6-0, 6-4 win over Franz at fourth singles while Cessna topped Strous 7-5, 6-3 at fifth singles.
Ethan Tabaka (Hermitage, Pa./West Middlesex) won 6-4, 6-2 over Noel at sixth singles.
The Tomcats will host the Franciscan Barons on March 22. The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
