GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team lost a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) 9-inning game to Thomas More College on Saturday by a final score of 8-2.
The Tomcats surrendered six runs in the first as the Saints gained an early advantage. In the first Jacob Whitford singled to center field to score Casey Metzger before a ground out to first by Ben Kenning that scored Sean Lawrence to make it 2-0. Sam Hauer singled to right field to score Whitford and Tanner Wolfe homered to left field to score two more runs. Metzger singled down the left field line to score the sixth run of the inning,
Thiel left two runners on base in the bottom of the second as the Tomcats were unable to drive in
Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) and
Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes), as they remained down 6-0 after two.
Thomas More added another run in the fourth as Lawrence doubled to center field to score Metzger that made the lead 7-0 in favor of the Saints after four.
The Saints followed up with another run scored in the eighth as Bailey Abbatiello doubled to left center before Casey Metzger doubled to left to score Abbatiello to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Tomcats fought back in the ninth to break up the shutout as
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) walked to start the inning and
Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) doubled to center field to advance Costanzo to third. Alec Varely hit a sacrifice-fly to center to score Costanzo before
Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) doubled to right center to bring in Grice to make it an 8-2 final.
Starter Tanner Teconcuk picked up the loss and Josh Cain earned the win.
Thiel (18-13, 10-7 PAC) will return to action on tomorrow when they take on Waynesburg University at Tomcat Park. The nine-inning game of the PAC is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
