GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team won a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) 9-inning game against Waynesburg University on Monday afternoon by a final score of 14-2.
 
The Tomcats took no time to put runs on the board as 
Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) hit a two-run double to left center before 
Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) doubled to left center that drove Grice in. The offense continued as 
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) singled down the line to score Patrice.
 
Thiel added to its four-run lead as 
Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) singled to left to drive in 
Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville). 
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) tripled to center field to with the bases full to cap off the inning. Thiel scored eight runs on eight hits in the first.
 
The Yellow Jackets answered in the second as Justin Buberl singled up the middle to score Tyler Godwin and Jonathan Kletzli to make it 8-2 after two. Waynesburg did not add another run on the day after the second.
 
With the bases loaded in the fourth, Grice hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Giesey to build the lead to 9-2.
 
Starter 
Matt Gayda (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) was relieved to start the fifth as 
Michael Rohm (Lisbon, Ohio/David Anderson) came on. Gayda did not earn a decision and allowed two earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts in four innings of work.
 
The Tomcat bats came alive again in the sixth as they plated three more runs in the frame.
 
In the eighth, Mitchell capped off his strong performance at the plate with a two-run home run to left field. It was his second blast of the season.
 
Mitchell went 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBIs. Also, 
Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) went 4-for-4 on the day.
 
In four innings of relief, Rohm allowed no runs or hits to earn his third win of the year.
 
The Tomcats' 14 runs and 19 hits were both season highs.
 
Thiel (19-13, 11-7 PAC) will return to action on Wednesday when they take on PAC opponent Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. The nine-inning game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
