GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team won a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Contest (PAC) game 12-3 over Bethany College Friday afternoon.
The Thiel offense proved to be the difference as the Tomcats scored 12 runs on the day.
The scoring started in the second a bases loaded walk to
Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) gave the Tomcats an early 1-0 lead.
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) hit into a fielder's choice to score
Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) later in the inning for Costanzo's first of three RBI's of the game. Thiel led 2-0 after two.
Costanzo kept the offense coming in the fourth as he singled to right to score both Lam and
Joe Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) to make it 4-0. Thiel scored two runs on a fielding error on a
Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) drive to left field to make it 6-0 before
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) blasted a three-run homerun to left field to make it 9-0 after four.
Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) and Grice both drove in runs to make it 11-0 after five.
The Bison answered in the sixth with a pair of runs and added another run in the eighth but it proved not to be enough as the Tomcats added a late run on a ground out from
Jonathan Oden (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) to make it 12-3 after eight.
Four batters (Costanzo, Lam, Patrice, Mitchell) had multi-hit games in the 12 run effort as Thiel had a season-high 42 at bats in the game.
Starter
Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) went seven innings allowing one earned run on seven hits and collected six strike outs. Forrester picked up his third win of the season.
Thiel (14-9, 6-4 PAC) will return to action tomorrow when they take on Bethany College on the road to finish the weekend PAC series. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
