GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team swept a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader over Bethany College on Saturday. Thiel won the first game 10-1 and the second game 8-4.
The Tomcats scored in the second as
Joe Mott (Kinsman, Ohio/Badger) singled to left field to drive in
Alex Lam (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) to make it 1-0 after two.
The Bison scored their lone run of game one on a wild pitch in the fourth as Starter
Nick Bucci (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) pitched a complete game and allowed no earned runs on just three hits. Bucci collected his sixth win this season which leads the PAC.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the sixth as Lam walked with the bases loaded to score
Nick Grice (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) to make it 2-1. The Tomcats were not done in the inning as Mott hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score
Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) and
Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) tripled to left scoring two that put the Tomcats up 5-1 after six.
In the seventh the Tomcats added five runs to secure the game on RBI's from
Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold),
Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan), Mott, Geisey, and
Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville).
Game two saw three scoreless innings before the Bison took a 1-0 lead in the fourth off a Jake Stemmerich homerun to left field.
Bethany then scored two more runs in the fifth off an Adam Becker single to center field which made it 3-0 after five.
Thiel answered with a four run sixth inning that included a triple by
Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) to score Marino before a Grice double to that scored Costanzo. Grice would score later in the inning on a wild pitch. Mott added another RBI on an infield hit and scored Mitchell to take the lead 4-3 after six.
In the seventh the Tomcats ensured the win with four more runs, three of which came off a
Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) drive that caused a fielding error on the center fielder. Thiel led 8-3 after the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the final inning Bethany added a run to make it 8-4.
Starter
Tanner Teconchuk (North Warren, Pa./Warren) went 6.1 innings allowed three earned runs on three hits and picked up his second win of the season. Also,
Matt Gayda (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice) picked up his second save of the season.
The Tomcats have won five straight games.
Thiel (16-9, 8-4 PAC) will return to action Tuesday when they take on the Saint Vincent Bearcats at Tomcat Park. The PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
