Tomcats sweep home opener

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team played its first game at Tomcat Park this season and opened with a 7-0 victory Tuesday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader against Mount Aloysius College.

Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) singled to right field to score Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) in the bottom of the second inning to give the Tomcats a 1-0 lead.

That run would be all starter Kevin Forrester (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) would need as he tossed a six-inning shutout with eight strikeouts.

The Tomcats added six more runs led by Costanzo, who went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs in the 7-0 win.

Thiel had another strong pitching performance in the second game from starter Nick Bucci (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice), who picked up his second win of the season after allowing just two runs on five hits in seven innings.

The Tomcats opened scoring in the second game with a four-run second inning. Nick Fowkes (New Eagle, Pa./Ringgold) hit a double down the left field line, which scored Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST). Zach Hudecek (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) also doubled to left field to score Fowkes.

Fowkes went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the second game to help the Tomcats earn an 8-2 win.

Thiel (5-5) will return to action in a doubleheader against Medaille on Thursday. The first game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
