Walk-offs lift Tomcats over Mavericks

Greenville, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team opened with a 7-6 victory Thursday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader against Medaille College.

The Tomcats jumped out to an early lead as Jake Marino (Pittsfield, Pa./Youngsville) doubled to right field to score Bryan Mitchell (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan). Then, Filippo Costanzo (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) drove Marino in with a single up the middle to make it 2-0 in favor of the Tomcats after the first inning.

Costanzo and Matt Hultquist (North Warren, Pa./Warren) both drove in a run each to give the Tomcats a 4-2 lead after three innings.

The Mavericks would tie the game at 5-5 in the seventh and then take the lead 6-5 in the ninth on an error by the Tomcats.

Theil answered in the bottom of the ninth with a Daniel Patrice (Munich, Germany/EST) single to right field driving in Mitchell and forcing the game into extra innings.
In the tenth inning, Andrew Giesey (Penn, Pa./Penn Trafford) hit a sacrifice fly to right field and scored Costanzo giving the Tomcats the victory 7-6.

Starter Tanner Teconchuk (North Warren, Pa./Warren) picked up a no-decision as he went seven innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits. Nate White (Franklin, Pa./Rocky Grove) got the win with his relief appearance in the tenth inning.
The Tomcats and Mavericks traded runs throughout the second game of the doubleheader.

Thiel took an early 4-1 lead after two innings, but Medaille answered and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth.
Hultquist homered in the fifth to regain the lead for the 6-5 in favor of the Tomcats.

The Mavericks tied the game in the seventh off a Kyle Powell RBI and Daniel Luppens stole home to make the game tied at 7-7 going into the bottom of the inning.

Thiel filled the bases in the bottom of the seventh which lead to Marino getting hit by a pitch to drive in Griffin Curry (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) for the winning run making the final 8-7.

Thiel (7-5) will return to action in a doubleheader against Geneva College on Tuesday, March 28rd in Beaver Falls, Pa. The first game is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
