Thiel men's tennis wins first PAC match of season

Tomcats defeat Titans 6-3

WARREN, Ohio. – The Thiel College men's tennis team improved to 6-4 overall and won its first PAC match of the season by knocking off Westminster 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Trumball Tennis Center.

The Tomcats (6-4, 1-1) claimed two out of the three doubles matches to begin the day. At first doubles, the sophomore tandem of Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) and Collin McAndrew (Dayton, Ohio/General McLane) picked up their sixth win of the season by an 8-2 count. The Blue and Gold took a 2-1 lead into singles play when the #3 tandem of freshman Logan Sturgeon and freshman Trevor Fancher scored an 8-6 triumph.

Parks, McAndrew, Sturgeon, and Yoseif Woldegebriel all went on to win in singles action to secure Thiel's first win over Westminter since the program was reinstated in 2010. Parks was victorious at #1 by a 6-2, 6-0 margin and McAndrew posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #2 to leave the Tomcats one win away from the clincher.

Sturgeon provided the winning point, as he nailed down a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 victory at three singles. Woldegebriel added one more win to the total in the match of the day, as he rallied back from a first-set loss to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 at #6.

Thiel will return to action Sunday with a non-conference match against Pitt-Bradford. Doubles play will kick off the match at 11 a.m.
