Men’s Tennis defeats Daemen

AMHERST, NY. — The Tomcat men's tennis team defeated the Wildcats of Daemen 8-1 on Saturday evening in Amherst, NY.

In doubles competition, the Tomcats swept for the first time, taking all three doubles matches. Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) and Collin McAndrew (Dayton, Ohio/General McLane) defeated Greg Lowe and Zach Kinniard 8-4 at number one doubles. Shun Kogai (Tokyo, Japan/) and Shinjiro Todaka (Tokyo, Japan/Hyuga-gakuin ) won 8-6 at number two doubles, and Logan Sturgeon and Danny Dawson took an 8-2 victory at number three.

The Wildcats got on the scoreboard thanks to a Greg Lowe victory over Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) at number one singles, but the Tomcats roared back, winning the final five singles matches. McAndrew disposed of Zach Kinniard 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles. Thiel clinched the match when freshman Logan Sturgeon picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gary Arruda at number three singles. With the contest wrapped up for the Tomcats, Thiel added three more individual victories as Kogai defeated Mike Obermeier 6-2, 6-2 at number four, Shinjiro Todaka (Tokyo, Japan/Hyuga-gakuin ) notched his first victory this season, defeating Brad Casper at number five, and Yosief Woldegebriel (Hartsville, Pa./William Tennent) improved to 2-0 on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win at number six singles.

The Tomcats will return to action on Saturday March 2, when they take on Pitt-Greensburg in Greensburg, Pa. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start time.
