Thiel men's tennis cruises to win over D'Youville in spring season opener

ERIE, Pa. - The Thiel men's tennis team notched its first win of the spring season Sunday with a 8-1 victory over visiting D'Youville College at the Westwood Racquet Club.

Playing in their first match of the spring season, the Tomcats improved to 2-2 overall (including fall matches) and 1-0 in 2013.

Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) led the way in the win for the Tomcats. At No. 1 singles he defeated Rob Amabile 6-3, 7-5. He then teamed up with Collin McAndrew (Dayton, Ohio/General McLane) at No. 2 doubles for an easy 8-1 win over Amabile and Jericko Gonzalez.

McAndrew was also a winner at No. 2 singles, defeating Gonzalez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Also posting a pair of wins for the Tomcats were Logan Sturgeon at #3 singles and doubles and Shun Kagai at #4 singles and #2 doubles. Yosief Woldegebriel (Hartsville, Pa./William Tennent) picked up his first collegiate tennis win in his first match, with a 6-2, 6-2 win over James Moran at #6 singles.
 
The Tomcats are back in action on Saturday, February 23, when they travel to Amherst, New York to take on Daemen College.
