ERIE, Pa. – The men's tennis team came out on top after a long battle against D'Youville on Sunday afternoon by the score of 5-4.
The Tomcats would quickly strike first in doubles play as they won the first two matches. The duo of
Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) and
Collin McAndrew (Dayton, Ohio/General McLane) would win 8-2 over Steve Beatty and Rob Amabile.
Jian Long Zheng (Fujian, China/Quanzhou ZianDi ) and
D.J. Dunlevy (Marbury, Md./Henry E. Lackey) captured the number two doubles 8-5, defeating Marc Moyer and John Krieg.
With Thiel leading 2-1 after doubles play; D'Youville's Beatty would tie the match with a 4-6, 2-6 win over
Richard Parks (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills). The Spartans would take wins at the number three and four singles before the Tomcats would strike back with
Shun Kogai (Tokyo, Japan/) taking the win at number five singles by the score of 2-6, 6-2, (10-8). The Thiel would tie the score at 4-4 as
Erik Serjeant (Arnold, Pa./Valley) defeated Derek Schall 6-0, 6-1 at number six singles.
With the match being tied, it was up to
Collin McAndrew (Dayton, Ohio/General McLane) to secure the win for the Tomcats, as he was the last player on the court. Being down by three match points in number two singles, McAndrew would fight back to earn the come-from-behind victory over Rob Amabile 5-7, 7-6 (8), 10-8 to secure the third win of the season for the Tomcats.
The Tomcats move to 3-5 on the season and will open PAC play as they host Bethany College on March 21 in Greenville, Pa. The match is set to start at 3 p.m.
