GREENVILLE, Pa. — With another full season in the books, the Tomcat men's basketball team goes into Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament hosting a first-round game for the third straight season. Thiel will begin post-season play Tuesday when they host seventh-seeded Washington & Jefferson College at 7 p.m.
In their two meetings so far this season the Tomcats have been victorious twice, winning the first game at Beeghly Gymnasium 63-48 before taking care of business on the road 68-64.
Over the course of the season the Tomcats have been led by a trio of players on court.
Blair Rozenblad (Youngstown, Ohio/Kennedy Catholic) is having his best all-around season as a Tomcat, as he finished the regular season averaging a double-double (15.4 points/10.8 rebounds) and currently ranks 14th in Division III in rebounds per game. Rozenblad has notched 12 double-doubles this season and has achieved that status in nine of his previous 10 contests. In Thiel's previous meeting with the Presidents Rozenblad dropped a game-high 20 points while totaling 13 boards.
The Tomcats also depended on a pair of talented back-court performers in
Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./George Junior Republic) and
Anthony Harvey (New Castle, Pa./New Castle). Adams averaged 13.1 points and 5.1 assists this season, while Harvey is averaging 12.4 points and leads the team in steals and free throw percentage (81.9%). Harvey has been the more productive player as of late, scoring 20-plus points in his previous two contests.
The Presidents are led by the conference's leading scorer in Zach Bellhy, who is averaging 18.9 points per game and shooting 44.8 percent from the field. Bellhy averaged 23.5 points per game against the Tomcats this season, including a 27-point performance in the Presidents' 63-48 loss in Greenville.
As a team the Tomcats enter contest as the conference's second best shooting team, converting on 46 percent of their shots, where as the Presidents rank seventh in the conference at 42 percent. Thiel will also look to use their solid defense as they rank first in the PAC in opponents field goal percentage, allowing teams to shoot just 39 percent.
Three more contests will also take place on the first night of the PAC Championship Tournament with the winner of Monday's play in game (Waynesburg/Westminster) game traveling to the top seed Bethany College; #3 Thomas More will host #6 Geneva, and #4 Saint Vincent and #5 Grove City will square off in Latrobe. If the Tomcats defeat the Presidents they will then host the Thomas More/Geneva winner on Thursday.
All nine PAC men's teams will participate in the single-elimination tournament, beginning with a number 8 / number 9 first round "play-in" game Monday night in New Wilmington between Waynesburg University and Westminster College, with the winner traveling to face top-seeded Bethany College in one quarterfinal Tuesday. Other quarterfinals include sixth-seeded Geneva College at third seed Thomas More College, and fifth seed Grove City College at four-seeded Saint Vincent College. Top remaining seeds will host the semifinal matchups Thursday at 7 p.m., with the championship set for the highest remaining seed Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
