GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel men's tennis team notched its first conference win of the season Wednesday with a 9-0 shutout over visiting Washington & Jefferson.
Playing in their final home match of the season, the Tomcats improved to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Louie Rubin (Lock Haven, Pa., Central Mountain) led the way in the win for the Tomcats. At No. 1 singles he bounced back from a 6-3 loss in the first set, winning 6-0 in the second and 10-6 in the third to get the victory. He then teamed up with
Zach Kubec (Geneva, Ohio, Geneva) at No. 2 doubles for an easy 8-0 win.
Kubec was also a winner at No. 4 singles. He has now won four straight singles matches and three straight doubles matches while teaming with Rubin.
Also posting wins for the Tomcats were
Jian Long Zheng (Fujian, China, Quanzhou ZianDi ) at No. 2 singles and
Matt Hadden (Franklin, Pa., Rocky Grove) at No. 3 singles. It was the second straight win in singles for Zheng. Hadden and Zheng pulled out a great win at No. 2 doubles, beating Brian Felker and Chris Fidel, 8-6.
Winning by forfeit for Thiel were
Naoki Osawa (Ota Gumma, Japan, Jyutoku) and
Brad Schell (Linesville, Pa., Conneaut) in singles and the team of
Josh Bartsch (Pittsburgh, Pa., The Kiski School) and
Kirt Strock (Zanesville, Ohio, Tri-Valley) in doubles.
