GREENVILLE, Pa. —
Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa., George Junior Republic) scored a game-high 19 points and Thiel continued to play solid defense in a 70-36 blowout of visiting Grove City in a Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball game Wednesday, The win completes a perfect 10-0 regular season at Beeghly Gymnasium by the Tomcats.
The 36 points given up by the Tomcats is the lowest allowed by any team in the PAC this season. Each of the previous two lows were recorded by Grove City, who allowed 37 in a win over Penn State Altoona and 39 in a win over Waynesburg. It's also the lowest point total allowed by the Tomcats since they gave up just 33 points in a 63-33 win over Carnegie Mellon on Jan. 13, 1998.
With the win, Thiel is one victory away from clinching the top seed in this year's conference tournament.
Adams had one of his best shooting nights of the year with a 7-of-11 mark from the field and a 4-of-8 night from beyond the arc. He added six rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Defensively, the Tomcats were dominant in the first half. They didn't allow a point until Grove City's Steve Battagla made a free throw 6:42 into the game. The Wolverines didn't hit their first field goal until 8:08 left until the break.
Thiel, meanwhile, was quickly increasing its lead with a 12-0 run to start the game and a 20-1 run until Grove City finally made a shot. Five different players scored during the run, including six points apiece by Adams and
Anthony Harvey (New Castle, Pa., New Castle).
Blair Rozenblad (Youngstown, Ohio, Kennedy Catholic),
Lance Randall (Canfield, Ohio, Ursuline),
Austin Forbes (Lighthouse Point, Fla., Pompano Beach) and
Ladell Trotty (Cleveland, Ohio, Lutheran East) added two points apiece.
The six points by both Adams and Harvey came in just over 10 minutes of play. Brett Matson was the only Grove City player to score more than that in the entire game with his team-high nine points.
Eleven different players scored for the Tomcats, including 13 points by Harvey.
John Pecchia (Boardman, Ohio/Youngstown Christian) came off the bench and finished with 10 points. Harvey dished out a game-high seven assists, which was more than the entire Grove City team. Rozenblad and Forbes contributed six points, while senior
Alan George (Brunswick, Ohio, Saint Edward) pulled down four rebounds.
Thiel held the Wolverines to 17 percent shooting in the first half and 25 percent in the game.
The Tomcats improve to 16-6 overall and 11-1 in the conference, while the Wolverines fall to 5-17 and 2-10. Thiel will play at Westminster on Saturday.
