Thiel Women to Travel to Top-Ranked Thomas More

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel women's basketball program will, for the second year in a row, travel to top-seeded Thomas More  to kick off the 2011 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Women's Basketball Championship Tournament Tuesday evening.

Thomas More (25-0, 16-0 PAC), ranked number one in the nation by both the USA Today/WBCA and D3Hoops.com Division III Top 25 polls, has won three-straight conference championship tournaments, while Thiel (5-20, 3-13 PAC) and second-year head coach Angie Zeuch last posted a tournament win in 2009 as the then-fifth seeded Tomcats dealt fourth-seeded Grove City College a 65-51 loss on Feb. 24.

Thomas More owns a 12-0 all-time record against Thiel, dating back to the 2005-2006 season. The Tomcats managed to keep their Jan. 15 game against the Saints at Beeghly Gymnasium close, trailing by just six (36-30) at the half en route to a 77-65 defeat. Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa., Western Reserve Academy) led three Tomcats in double figures, finishing with 17 points and five rebounds. Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) added 13 points and six rebounds while Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio, Trotwood-Madison) chipped in with 11 points, seven assists, seven steals, and three rebounds. The Tomcats shot 38.5 percent (25-65) from the field while shooting 80.0 percent (12-15) from the free throw line and also committed just 13 turnovers.

Barzak and Muffley continue to pace the Tomcat offense, ranking ninth and 10th, respectively, in scoring in the PAC. Barzak (11.8 ppg) also leads the league and is 27th in Division III in blocks (2.81 bpg). After registering five blocks in a 74-49 loss to the Saints on Feb. 16 Barzak became the program's all-time leader with 124, surpassing Cindy Bynum's previous record of 120 (1984-88).

Muffley (11.5 ppg) is currently third in the conference three-point field goal percentage (.400) and seventh in three-pointers made (1.44/g).

Live statistics will be available for the 6 p.m. contest. Thomas More has also made the contest available to view online via a live Web broadcast.
