Late Rally Sparks Waynesburg Win Over Thiel

WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Looking for its seconds consecutive win in the conference, Thiel led by 12 points over Waynesburg in the middle of the second half before a late rally sparked the Yellowjackets to a 77-69 win in a Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball game Thursday.

The Tomcats picked up a much-needed win over Bethany on Monday thanks to a late 3-pointer by Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy). It looked like coach Angie Zeuch's team was going to make it two in a row and even its record in the PAC,

Katie Fife (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township)'s layup with 9:41 to play in the game put the Tomcats up 58-46. Unfortunately, the Tomcat defense fell apart as the Yellowjackets closed the game with a 31-11 run. They shot 10 for 17 during that stretch.

Jessi Drayer scored the game-tying layup for Waynesburg to knot the score at 65-65 with 3:20 to play. The Yellowjackets took the lead less than a minute later with a 3-pointer by Hannah Hunter.

Multiple Thiel players contributed to a great start to the second half that gave the Tomcats a double-digit lead, including Kelly Mufffley, who made three 3-pointers during that stretch. Freshman Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) also drained a trey, Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) and Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Wilkinsburg) hit two baskets apiece and Kaleigh Murphy (Yukon, Pa./Yough), Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) and Fife all contributed two points.

Waynesburg and Thiel were close to equal in most statistical categories with the exception of points from the bench. The Yellowjacket reserves outscored the Tomcats' 22-12.

Muffley had a great game stastically with team-highs in both points (17) and assists (6) in addition to six rebounds. Davis finished with 13 points - nine came in the first half - and six rebounds. Barzak came up one board shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds while Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) did her part with eight points and three steals.

Waynesburg's Elisha Jones led all scorers with 20 points. Hunter (16 points), Drayer (14) and Brittany Spencer (11) also reached double-figures.

Both teams struggled at the foul line with Thiel making eight of 18 attempts and Waynesburg posting a 14-of-24 mark at the charity stripe.

Thiel falls to 2-10 on the season, including an 0-5 record on the road. The Tomcats will be on the road again with a game at Grove City on Saturday.
