BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - For the second straight game, Thiel's women's basketball team played a game that ended at the foul line, but this time the visiting Tomcats came out on top in a 68-66 win over Geneva.
The Golden Tornadoes appeared to send the game into overtime with a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired by Christina Carugati. But, a technical foul on the Geneva bench allowed Thiel's
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) to put the game away with a pair of free throws.
The win ends a 20-game losing streak on the road for the Tomcats. They have won at neutral sites, but their last win playing in an opponents' gym came on Feb. 24, 2009, with a 65-51 win over Grove City in the Presidents' Athletic Conference tournament.
The two wins over Geneva is also the Tomcats' first season sweep over an opponent they played twice in a season since they beat Waynesburg twice during the 2007-2008 season.
Thiel trailed Geneva by 11 points with just over eight minutes to play before making a comeback run to win the game.
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) scored seven of her team-high 16 points in the final five minutes of play to help erase the deficit.
Four players reached double-figures in scoring for the Tomcats. In addition to Muffley,
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland) tallied 11 points while
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio/Trotwood-Madison) and
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) scored 10 points apiece.
Nina Gabrelcik (Niles, Ohio/Niles McKinley) provided a boost off the bench with seven points in just 12 minutes of action.
Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Wilkinsburg) had a solid all-round game with eight points and seven assists.
Barzak continued her rise toward the top of Thiel's record book with six more blocks. She is already the single-game record holder with eight and should easily be the all-time leader when her college career is over.
Leah Prisuta paced the Golden Tornadoes with 18 points. Carugati was right behind her with 14 points while Beth DeLuca and Alysa Scarsella chipped in with 14 and 11, respectively.
Thiel (4-14) will host Washington & Jefferson on Saturday at 1 p.m.
