PITTSBURGH, Pa. - A fairly anticlimactic finish capped off an otherwise great women's basketball Wednesday night as visiting Thiel fell to Chatham 58-55 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference contest.
Trailing 55-53 with 15 seconds left in the game, Thiel's
Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa./Wilkinsburg) hit a jumper to tie the game. Jones' shot appeared to put the pressure on Chatham to hit a shot of its own if it wanted to win the game in regulation, but instead the game was decided at the foul line.
Sonjia Hoston was fouled with just seconds on the clock and made one of two free throws. Her miss on the second shot was rebounded by Colleen Kiss, who was fouled and hit both shots to give the Cougars the three-point win.
Chatham held the largest lead by either team when Felicia Brown's layup put her team up eight points 7:08 left in the second half. Thiel quickly cut the lead to two with a bucket by
Chelsi Clark (Greenwich, Ohio/South Central), a 3-pointer by
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) and a free throw by Jones, but it took until 15 seconds left to finally tie the game.
The first half was just as closely contested as the second. Thiel trailed 29-25 before
Katie Fife (Canonsburg, Pa./Peters Township) nailed a jumper to cut the lead to two points at the half.
Chatham received a huge boost from its bench. The Cougar reserves scored well over half the team's points with 36 compared to Thiel's 16. Kiss was the main reason for the difference. She led all scorers with 18 points in just 19 minutes of playing time.
Jones continued her recent surge of offensive production with a team-high 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) has been reliable for at least close to a double-double all season and Wednesday was no different as she tallied 14 rebounds and 11 points.
Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio/Youngstown Early College) scored eight points and hit two of the team's three treys.
The Tomcats are still looking for their first win on the road this season as they fall to 0-7 with the loss. They are 3-5 at home playing in Beeghly Gymnasium, but two of those losses came to two nationally-ranked teams in Thomas More and Saint Vincent.
Thiel will play Saint Vincent for the second time this season, this time on the road, on Saturday.
