GREENVILLE, Pa. — Balanced scoring helped Thiel overcome a great individual effort by Westminster's Emily Dolsak in a 68-59 win Wednesday at Beeghly Gymnasium.
Three players reached double-figures for the Tomcats and two others combined for 17 points, while the Titans had the game's top scorer in Dolsak with her 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
A putback by Thiel's
Rianne Thornton (Trotwood, Ohio, Trotwood-Madison) broke a 51-51 tie with 5:43 left to play, giving the Tomcats a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Keeping with the team effort, six different players scored in the final five minutes to hold off the Titans. Thornton,
Ashley Davis (Cleveland, Ohio, St. Peter Chanel),
Bethany Hines (Youngstown, Ohio, Youngstown Early College),
Jasmin Jones (Pittsburgh, Pa., Wilkinsburg),
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa., Western Reserve Academy) and
Kelly Barzak (Warren, Ohio, Howland) all scored during the closing stretch.
Davis recorded her third double-double in four games with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Through the five games she has played this season, Davis is averaging 12.0 points and 9.6 boards.
Barzak also had a double-double for the Tomcats with 11 points, nine of which came in the first half, and 10 rebounds. She added four blocks and is now 31 away from becoming the school's all-time leader despite being just a sophomore.
Jones bucketed 12 points and pulled down seven boards in the win. Muffley and and
Kaleigh Murphy (Yukon, Pa./Yough) added nine and eight points, respectively. Murphy, a freshman, had a nice first half with six points on three shots. Her eight points came with only nine minutes of playing time.
The Tomcats jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead to start the game and led by as much as six points after a Muffley three-pointer. The game was tied seven different times in the first half before Murphy scored with 38 seconds left to give Thiel a 32-30 lead at the break.
The win improves Thiel's record in the Presidents' Athletic Conference to 2-4. After winning just one of their first 10 games, the Tomcats have shown improvement with two wins in their past four games, with both losses coming by single-digits.
Next up for the Tomcats is a home game Saturday against a tough Thomas More team. The Saints are undefeated at 13-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference and are ranked third in the nation in Division III.
