Tomcat men run win streak to five vs. Bethany

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 3, 2010) – The Thiel College men's basketball team held on to upset Bethany at Beeghly Gymnasium Wednesday night, 86-84, in a key Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup. In a game that featured a staggering 39 fouls and a late Bison run, Thiel held on, making the most of several key plays by senior guard Sean Devinney (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic) (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic) down the stretch.
With Thiel down, 83-80, with 1:23 to play, Devinney dropped in a layup, drawing a Nick Wilcox foul in the process. Devinney's make on the ensuing and-one evened the score at 83 all.
Just 30 seconds later, Devinney laid in the eventual game-winner. Bethany and Thiel traded a pair of free throws to set the final.
A foul called on freshman Blair Rozenblad (Youngstown, Ohio/Kennedy Catholic) with 1.6 seconds remaining sent Bethany's Jonas Ankrom – a 72% free throw shooter – to the line to shoot two. Both shots were off target, with Rozenblad pulling the game's final rebound as the standing-room crowd of 507 roared.
Rozenblad paced the Tomcats with 23 points followed by junior Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./George Junior Republic)  who tossed in 19.
Devinney finished with 17 points.
The Tomcat win overshadowed a 35-point, 10-rebound night by Bethany's Joe Testa. Three other Bison scored in double figures.
Thiel, which snapped a 15-game winless streak against the Bison, extended its winning streak to five and upped their record at home to 6-2 on the season. Bethany, on the other hand, fell to 14-6 on the year and saw their five-game win streak snapped.
Thiel overcame shoddy rebounding the first half to enter the intermission with a, 42-33, lead. The Tomcats shot blazing 61.3% in the half, while holding the Bison to 41.4%, but were out-rebounded by an 18-to-13 margin.
Bethany regrouped in the second half to finish with a 48.3% shooting night from the floor; Thiel wound up shooting 58.2%. Bethany held a 33-to-28 advantage on the boards and forced 12 Tomcat turnovers to their 10.
Thiel (11-9; 4-4 PAC) travels to Waynesburg on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
