GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 13, 2010) – The Thiel College men's basketball team ran its winning streak to eight games, by racing past the Westminster Titans, 88-78, Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The Tomcats' current streak ties the program record for consecutive victories set during the 1939-40 season. Thiel also improved its home record to 7-1 on the year.
To say that senior
Sean Devinney (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic) (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic) and freshman
Blair Rozenblad (Youngstown, Ohio/Kennedy Catholic) played a role in the Tomcat victory would be an understatement.
Devinney poured in a career-high 30 points – including a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line – and dished out a game-high tying three assists. The 6-2 guard converted on 9-of-14 shots from the floor with two makes from beyond the three-point arc.
Rozenblad dropped 27 on the Titans for the second time in two meetings, having also accomplished the feat in Westminster's, 88-86, win over the Tomcats on Jan. 13. Saturday marked the 14th 20-plus point outing for the rookie this season.
Additionally, Rozenblad pulled down a team-high 11 boards to earn his eighth double-double on the year.
Westminster drew first blood in the contest to earn what would equal their largest lead of the game. Despite shooting at a 56.5% clip in the opening period – thanks in no small part to Ryne Murray's 6-of-6, 17-point performance from the field – Westminster led for fewer than three minutes in the half.
Devinney tossed in 20 points to pace Thiel's red-hot 58.6%-shooting effort from the field in the first half, which the Tomcats rode to a, 46-39, lead at the intermission.
Thiel stepped up its game in the second half as it stretched its lead to as many as 17 points before Murray – who was shutout in the second half until the 2:04 mark – caught fire to pace a game-ending 14-to-4 Titan run with 12 points.
Murray finished the game with 30 points, with eight makes from long range.
Thiel (14-9; 7-4 PAC) wraps up its regular season on Wednesday when it welcomes league-leading Thomas More. The Saints (17-6; 8-3 PAC) dropped a PAC game to Bethany, 91-75, on Saturday.
Thomas More – who nipped the Tomcats, 91-88, on Jan. 16 – is the only PAC team that Thiel has not beaten at least once this season and is the last team to have beaten the Blue and Gold.
