Thiel announces NGWSD and Pink Zone dates

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 10, 2010) – The Thiel College women's basketball team will use its home games on Feb. 13 and 17 to promote important causes, head coach Angie Zeuch has announced.
On Saturday, Feb. 13, Thiel will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) as the Tomcat women host the Westminster College Titans at 1 p.m. Women and girls of all sports are invited to attend the event and are encouraged to wear their home athletics jerseys.
Shooting contests and special recognition will take place during the game.
“On Saturday we would like to recognize and support female athletes of all ages in their athletic endeavors,” said Zeuch. “The experiences, lessons, and memories made through being involved in sport are priceless.”
NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
Thiel will host its annual Pink Zone game on Wednesday, Feb. 17 when it plays host to Presidents' Athletic Conference frontrunner Thomas More.
Official Thiel Pink Zone t-shirts will be available for sale during the Feb. 13 game, with remaining shirts being sold on Feb. 17. Shirts will cost $10 with all proceeds going toward breast cancer research and awareness.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities.
“This event is 'For every fight won. For each battle lost. For those still fighting',” said Zeuch. “I am glad that our College as well as the Presidents' Athletic Conference is dedicated to this great cause. The support from the Thiel community and throughout Greenville is sincerely appreciated.”
