WASHINGTON, Pa. – Four different players scored in double figures as the Tomcats defeated the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson 84-73 to move to 2-0 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
Thiel got out to a quick 11-3 start in the first five minutes of play as five different players scored a bucket including five points by senior guard
Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa., George Junior Republic), who had a season high 29.
The Presidents were able to battle back and tie the game at 25 on a lay-up by Uchenna Okocha with six minutes left to play in the first half. The rest of the half was played tight but W&J was able to take the lead for the first time in the game at the 4:07 mark on a pair of free throws by Paul Matthews. W&J would tack on a few more points as they took a 37-33 lead into the half.
Washington & Jefferson jumped on Thiel early in the second half and expanded their lead to 45-37 just two minutes into the half. Thiel would battle back and tie the game at 50 on a lay-up by Adams with 12:44 remaining in the game. The Tomcats would then flip the switch as they scored 10 straight points in the next two minutes which included baskets by four different players including a three-pointer by sophomore guard
Blair Rozenblad (Youngstown, Ohio, Kennedy Catholic).
Washington & Jefferson would battle back but could get no closer than a three point deficit as the Tomcats led by as many as 12 points and won the game by a score of 84-73.
Along with Adams' 29 points, Rozenblad added his fifth double-double of the season as he had 24 points and ten rebounds. Senior guard
Ladell Trotty (Cleveland, Ohio, Lutheran East) and sophomore forward
Lance Randall (Canfield, Ohio, Ursuline) also joined Adams and Rozenblad in double figures as they each added ten points.
As a team, the Tomcats shot 56% from the floor and also forced the Presidents into 15 turnovers to improve their record to 6-3 and stay undefeated in conference play.
The Tomcats will have almost a three week break as they play Clarion University on December 30th. Tip- off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
