Greenville, Pa (January 27, 2010) -- On Wednesday, Beeghley Gymnasium transformed into a crucible that the visiting Geneva College Tornadoes couldn't survive. With the backcourt combo of
Kelly Muffley (Salsburg, Pa./Western Reserve Academy) and
Chelsea Meister (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center ) shooting lights out from three, and a stifling defense that held the Tornadoes to shooting a mere 29 percent from the field, the women of Thiel College basketball defeated Geneva, 57-53.
After watching the visiting Tornadoes jump out to an 8-2 lead in the first three minutes of play, the Tomcats, led by three straight three's made by Muffley, gained the lead and an outstanding team defensive effort, that held Geneva's shooting to less than 30 percent in the first half, made sure they never looked back.
Over the course of the contest, the 'Cats would continue their hot hand from three, converting on 7-of-13 trifectas, while a stingy defense held Geneva's shooting to just below 29.5 percent overall.
Muffley led the way for the Tomcat's as she scored 19 points, converting on 4-of-5 threes, and grabbed three rebounds, while freshman five,
Kelly Barzak (Warren, OH/Howland), registered a double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while swatting five shots.
The women head to Washington, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 30 to face the Presidents for a 2 p.m. match up.
