GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Thiel College men's basketball has played in eight different arenas since Nov. 22. But no matter where it travels – home or away, in-conference or interleague – misfortune stalks the Tomcats, who just can't shake their current skid which hit 13 games on Wednesday evening with a, 75-68, loss at Grove City.
Thiel (1-15; 0-6 Presidents') has, however, shown some fight in a tough first half versus league opponents. Wednesday's bout at College Arena was no exception.
Although the Tomcats never held the lead, they hung in the game, eventually forcing the game's first tie near the eight-minute mark of the second half. The Wolverines succeeded at keeping their in-county foe in check down the stretch, converting 13 of 18 free throws in the contests' final minutes.
Three Grove City players – Andy O'Keefe, Joe McCoy and Ryan Gibson – recorded 16 points apiece to lead a blistering offense which shot nearly 56 percent from the floor.
Similarly, three Tomcats hit double digit scoring totals, led by the recently red-hot
Sean Devinney (Arsenal, Pa./Central Catholic), who poured in 19.
Nick Sefscik (Allison Park/Shaler) threw in 17 and
Cory Chaffee (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) added 15 to round out Thiel's scoring leaders.
Despite the outcome, most other statistical categories were relatively even. Grove City, who pulled into a tie for first place in the conference with the win, held a slim 27-26 advantage on the boards, while points off of turnovers were deadlocked at 14.
Disparity was quite obvious, though, in the free throws. Thiel had just nine chances from the line, while Grove City racked up 24, converting 19.
Thiel continues its three-game road trip on Saturday when it visits Waynesburg.
