BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 19) -- The Thiel College men's basketball team shot just 34.3 percent from the field in the first half of Saturday's matchup with Geneva College, and despite rebounding to hit for 48.3 percent of their second half field goal opportunities, the Tomcats suffered a 73-68 road loss to the Golden Tornadoes.
Freshman guard Devon Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./George Junior Republic) (Philadelphia/George Junior Republic) paced the Tomcats (6-8) with 21 points. Senior forward Joe Herrmann (Hartstown/Jamestown) (Hartstown/Jamestown) added 12 points and five rebounds and sophomore guard Nick Sefcsik (Allison Park/Shaler) added 12 points and three steals. Thiel finished shooting 40.6 percent (26-64) from the floor for the game and maintained a 40-36 advantage on the glass against Geneva. Geneva's (9-7) Greg McDivitt led the Golden Tornadoes with 21 points and five rebounds. Mike Ross added 12 in the win. Geneva finished shooting 42.0 percent (21-50) from the field and knocked down 25-of-38 (65.8%) of its free throw opportunities.
The Tomcats pushed out to an early 13-5 lead before the Golden Tornadoes took a 16-15 lead on a McDivitt jumper with 9:48 to go in the first. Sefcsik's three-pointer with 6:29 remaining before the break capped a 9-1 Tomcat lead to give the visitors a 24-19 advantage. Geneva's 14-4 run to close out the opening period put the home team in front 33-28 at the break.
Geneva watched its second half lead swell to as many as 12 (57-45) before another Sefcsik three cut the Golden Tornado lead to three (71-68) with 16 seconds left in the contest. A pair of Justin Nardi free throws closed out the scoring.
Thiel hosts Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Grove City College at Beeghly Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m.
