GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Thiel College softball team dropped a pair of losses 10-0 and 11-6 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) double-header against Saint Vincent Wednesday evening from Tomcat Park.
Game 1: Thiel 0, Saint Vincent 10
Saint Vincent wasted no time setting the tone in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on defensive mistakes and situational hitting to plate three runs. An RBI ground out and additional unearned runs helped the visitors take a quick 3-0 lead.
The offense stayed hot in the second, as a two-run single down the right-field line to extend the advantage to 5-0.
Saint Vincent continued to take advantage of opportunities in the fourth, scoring on another ground out to make it 9-0, before adding a final insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single.
Madison Hufford (Cortland, Ohio/Mathews) had two fo Thiel's hits, as
Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) had the other.
Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) and Merolillo shared time on the mound, Herman with the loss.
Game 2: Thiel 6, Saint Vincent 11
Despite the effort, the Tomcats couldn't contain Saint Vincent's lineup late, as the Bearcats finished with a multi-run seventh inning to seal the win.
The Tomcats continued to respond late in the six frame with five runs. Herman and Hufford produced hits to the outfield to get runners on base. Both scored as they were brought home by
Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) and Makenn Oswalt. More runs score as Risser and
Julia Schimizzi (Willowick, Ohio/Willoughby South) singled up the middle.
The Bearcats started hot, notching four runs in the first and two in the second to give them the early edge. They continued scoring in the fourth but the Blue and Gold followed back by getting on the board for the first time of the day.
Herman, Hufford, Risser and
Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) all got two hits, Herman and Hufford each with a double.
On the mound, Fedder pitched all seven innings where she threw for 140 pitches and two strike outs.
Thiel is back in action tomorrow, Apr. 9 as they travel to Grove City to finish the remainder of their suspended game against the Wolverines.
