Softball sweeps Pitt Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa. (April 20) -- The Thiel College Softball team secured a road non-conference sweep of Pitt Greensburg Monday with wins of 7-3 in game one and 7-1 in the nightcap.

The Tomcats rise to 11-21 on the year while the Bobcats dip to 14-20.

Game 1 -- Thiel 7, Pitt Greensburg 3
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning as the Cats took advantage of an error to lead 1-0. Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) smacked a 2-run double later in the frame as Makenna Oswalt (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) capped the 5-run inning with her first collegiate home run, a 2-run shot.

The home side clawed back with 3 in the bottom of the frame before the Blue and Gold got a pair of insurance runs on a Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) 2-run double to spell the 7-3 final.

Fedder and Herman each had a pair of RBIs and a double each. Oswalt finished with two RBIs. Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) was 3-for-4 with a pair of two-baggers and 2 runs.

Fedder started in the circle for Thiel and worked the first five innings scoreless en route to her fourth win of the year. Lily Merolillo (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) collected her first collegiate save, tossing the final 1.2 innings scoreless.

Game 2 -- Thiel 7, Pitt Greensburg 1
Like game one, the Tomcats took advantage of the Bobcats' miscues to gain an early 5-0 lead after two innings. Herman and Julia Schimizzi (Willowick, Ohio/Willoughby South) each had run-scoring singles in the second as the home side made four errors in the first two frames.

Oswalt cranked her second long ball of the day in the fifth while Risser legged out an inside-the-park homer in the sixth to spell the 7-1 final.

Merolillo started for Thiel and retired the first eight batters before allowing back-to-back hits in the third. She did not allow a hit the rest of the way as the Bobcats plated 1 in the sixth by way of an error. The win for Merolillo is her fourth of the season as she tossed just 63 pitches.

Risser finished with a pair of hits and runs each while Herman had a 4-for-4 showing with two doubles and a RBI. Oswalt had two hits and runs each as Schimizzi logged one hit, run and RBI apiece.

Looking Ahead
Thiel will host Westminster, the top squad in the conference standings, Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 from Tomcat Park.
