Cats drop twinbill at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 15) -- The Thiel College Softball team dropped both halves of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) twinbill with Waynesburg University Wednesday evening from the Waynesburg Baseball and Softball.

Thiel drops to 9-19 (3-13) while the Yellow Jackets improve to 23-9 (11-5) with wins of 5-3 in game one and 8-0 (5 Inn.) in the nightcap.

Game 1 -- Thiel 3, Waynesburg 5
Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) smacked a run-scoring single in the seventh and Julia Schimizzi (Willowick, Ohio/Willoughby South) had a RBI double that pulled Thiel within 2 at 5-3 and brought the tying run to the plate. Thiel was unable to make any two-out magic happen, spelling the 5-3 final.

Fedder finished with a hit and a RBI at the plate. She worked five innings in the circle and allowed just 2 earned runs with a pair of K's. Schimizzi also finished with a hit and a RBI.

Waynesburg jumped to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Thiel manufactured a run with a pair of sacrifice bunts in the fifth to make it 5-1.

Madison Hufford (Cortland, Ohio/Mathews) had a 3-for-3 day in the opener with a run scored. Thiel held an 8-6 advantage in hits.

Game 2 -- Thiel 0, Waynesburg 8 (5 Inn.)
Thiel struggled to gain its footing in the nightcap as Waynesburg led 3-0 after the first inning. The Cats had baserunners in 4-of-5 innings but were unable to scrape any runs together.

The Jackets plated 2 in the fourth and 3 in the fifth to spell the five-inning final.

Lily Merolillo (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) started for Thiel and was tagged with the loss, falling to 3-5.

Looking Ahead
Thiel is back in action Saturday for Senior Day at 1 p.m. against Washington and Jefferson in leage action.
