TRAFFORD, Pa. (Feb. 9) -- Thiel College freshman wrestler
Jonathan Bissell (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) collected his second Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Newcomer of the Week honor Monday, as announced by the league office. The honor is Bissell's third from the conference this season as he was also named the PAC Wrestler of the Week once.
Bissell posted an undefeated 7-0 week with six first-period pins as he cruised to the 149-pound championship at Baldwin Wallace's John Summa Invitational and had a pair of dual wins on the week.
At the Summa Invitational Saturday, Bissell logged a dominant day with five first-period pins en route to his first collegiate tournament championship. He opened his day taking down Kaleb McCamick (Waynesburg) in 50 seconds then followed it up with his second pin of Alexander Johnson (Alfred State) in 1:18. Bissell pinned Justin Coiteux (St. John Fisher) in the quarterfinals (1:06) and Jack DeBoe (Mount Union) in 1:29 in the semifinal before closing his day with his final pin of Adrian Pigg (Ohio Northern) in 36 seconds.
Bissell posted pins of Waynesburg's JT Hollyfield (5:42) and Lycoming's Colby Steiler (1:58) in dual action Wednesday and Friday, respectively.
Bissell now sits at 23-5 on the year with each of his last seven victories coming from pin and each of the last six being first-period pins. He is 18-4 in tournament action, 5-1 in duals and leads the Tomcats with 17 pins.
The Tomcats are back on the mats Saturday for the PAC Championships hosted by Hiram College. Bissell aims to be Thiel's first 149-pound PAC champion since Hunter Martz in 2023.
