MANHEIM, Pa. (March 16) -- Thiel College wrestlers
Jonathan Bissell (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) and
Jacob Potts (Oakdale, Pa./South Fayette) were named Scholar All-Americans by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Monday afternoon. Additionally, the Thiel Wrestling squad finished the season ranked sixth in the DIII Team Scholar All-America Top 30 at 3.734.
Bissell boasted a 3.529 GPA in addition to posting a highly successful season on the mat for the Tomcats, going 27-7 en route to claiming the 157-pound Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) championship.
A chemistry major, Bissell competed at 149 pounds in the regular season before switching to 157 in the postseason. He was a two-time PAC Newcomer of the Week and one-time PAC Wrestler of the Week as he produced four different top-six finishes in tournaments, including a first-place showing at the Baldwin Wallace's John Summa Invitational.
Potts compiled a 3.80 GPA as he notched 16 wins on the mat with an eighth-place finish at the Region 4 Championships.
A nursing major, Potts placed third at the PAC Championships at 157. He competed at 165 and 157 throughout the season, and logged six pins while going 4-1 in dual action.
Thiel's sixth-place mark in team GPA was the highest of any PAC school. The Cats were the lone conference team to crack the Team Scholar All-America Top 30.
Augsburg (3.86 GPA) had the top spot while Wesleyan (3.846) was second, Washington and Lee (3.7859) third, Johns Hopkins (3.785) fourth and Heidelberg (3.7404) fifth.
