Tomcats take care of Grove City in straight sets

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 14) -- The Thiel College Women's Volleyball team took down Grove City College in straight sets Wednesday evening in front of a packed crowd from Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) clash.

The Tomcats rise to 7-6 (4-2) with set wins of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-16. The Cats also improve to 6-0 this season when winning the first set as the victory marks the Blue and Gold's first over the Wolverines at home (17-4, 5-1) since 2021.

Thiel hit at a .228 clip and limited Grove City, the conference's top attacking team, to a season-low .087 hitting.

Thiel used a 5-0 run that ballooned into an 8-1 spurt to lead 16-11 in set one. Hannah Myers (Warren, Ohio/John F. Kennedy Catholic) started the run with a kill while Lyndzee Amory (Edinboro, Pa./Saegertown) added a kill and a block. The visitors got within 1 at 17-16 before a 4-1 run capped with a pair of Ava Byer (Hollsopple, Pa./Canemaugh Township Area) kills made it 21-17 Tomcats. The Cats took the frame with a Caitlin Stephens (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) - Amory block to lead 1-0.

Myers record a match-high 11 kills with a block while Amory added nine on .286 with two blocks. Byer pitched in eight kills on .294 with six digs. Stephens added five kills on .273 with a block.

The home side logged 4-of-5 to lead 17-16 in set two before the Wolverines answered with 3 to lead 19-17. The Tomcats posted the next 4 as Arin DeLattre (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) capped the run with a solo block and a kill to make it 21-19. Grove City evened things at 21 before Thiel recorded 4 of the last 5, the last coming on a Megan Darno (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) kill, to make it 2-0.

DeLattre recorded five kills on .333 while tying for the match high in blocks (five) and aces (three). Darno added six kills and two blocks.

It was all Thiel in set three as a 6-1 run jumped into a 9-2 spurt to extend the Tomcats' lead to 23-13. An Amory kill along with an Owen Hansen (Lyman, Wyo./Lyman) dump sealed the match for the Cats.

Hansen dished out 17 helpers and added nine digs. Addi Vagi (Marysville, Mich./Marysville) recorded 18 assists with three digs.

The Cats held a 55-42 edge in digs as Jordan Yoder (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) posted a match-leading 17 with five assists. Sarah Wilson (Rural Valley, Pa./West Shamokin) added nine digs while Macie Williams (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) had eight. The visitors held a slim 8-7 edge in blocks.
